Road rash occurs when an athlete obtains cuts and irritation to the skin when falling and skidding across the ground. It occurs in cycling, triathlon bicycle racing, and off-road running and may range from small scratches to large cuts. Washing the wounds immediately and cleansing and dressing them in protective bandages prevents infections and facilitates healing. Athletes also use antiseptic sprays, clean gauze patches, and hydrogel dressings to return to practice or competition to facilitate healing and to minimize scarring.
