Scratch

Scratch means to withdraw out of an occasion or competition, either prior to when it begins or as it occurs. Riders, runners, or swimmers may withdraw due to injury, illness, technical issues, or strategic decision. Withdrawn competitors are indicated as “SCR” in the race results and receive no finishing time. Organizers monitor the pullouts for the sake of fair competition, compensation for the participants, and the adjustment of the starting lists. It is difficult for participants to withdraw but in some cases necessary for their well-being and future performance.
