Self seeding refers to a race where athletes begin the run, ride or triathlon in a wave or corral of their own choosing and are not required to start in a specific group, like their age group, for example. Athletes in a running race or even Grand Fondo will generally be asked to join a wave or corral based on a particular running pace or expected finishing time. In a self-seeded triathlon with a rolling swim start, athletes generally line up based on their predicted finish time for the swim discipline only, not the overall expected finish time for their triathlon.
