A slingshot occurs when a bike rider drafts the wind of a different cyclist in order to pass him quicker. The maneuver generally occurs in a sprint effort when a cyclist remains behind the other cyclist in order to conserve energy before opening up.
In endurance cycling, it’s beneficial to learn the slingshot move in stage finishes or a criterium. Close following the rider in front of you while conserving energy and responding immediately will reward you greatly for little effort. It has a lot to do with timing and tactics and makes for a good way to ride.
