Spin refers to the act of pedaling rapidly without resistance or very little resistance in a constant and even motion. It is commonly done on a recovery ride or as a warm-up.
In cycling and triathlon, spinning enhances efficiency, leg speed, and muscular endurance. A heavy gear will produce power but spinning puts the muscles to less exhaustion and conserves energy in the long run. Cyclists aim to ride 85 to 100 RPM in endurance rides most often, and high-performing cyclists tend to spin even quicker when climbing or when trying to break off the group.
