A sweeper is the last vehicle or official following the race to assist or remove athletes who are unable to continue. Often called the “broom wagon.”
In long-distance races, the sweeper ensures no participant is left behind and helps those struggling with injury, mechanical failure, or time cut-offs. They may offer transport, mechanical aid, or encouragement. Symbolically, the sweeper represents the end of the race and is a fixture in large, organized events.
