Bonus seconds are seconds deducted from a rider’s overall race time for being in the lead for portions or sprints of stage races such as the Tour de France. Riders receive extra bonuses for completing stages or middle sprints. There are 10-second, 6-second, or 4-second time bonuses that benefit the rider even when not winning. Time bonuses are rewarded early on in major races to provide incentive for competitive racing and give quick finishers a hope of wearing the yellow jersey. Time bonuses are very significant in close races when seconds count. They also inspire sprinters or tactical riders to ride harder on decisive stages.
