A “touch” in swimming occurs when a swimmer strikes the wall or the end wall’s touchpad at the conclusion of a lap or race. It halts the clock and marks the swimmer’s time. In competition in the swimming pool, a touchpad refers to electronic panels in the wall that detect contact. Technique is highly necessary, particularly for the strokes that have a two-hand touch, such as the butterfly and the breaststroke. In open water competitions, a swimmer typically touches a vertical panel to conclude the race. A touch determines the winner in a very close result.
