“Ultra” refers to any long-distance endurance competition or race that lasts longer than a standard marathon, which is 42.195 kilometers or 26.2 miles. Examples include ultramarathons, ultra-triathlons, and ultra-cycle competitions.
Ultras range from 50 km runs to multi-day events covering over 200 miles. They are typically held on trails, mountains, or difficult terrain, and have additional challenges such as climbing, navigation, and determining when to seek aid. Being mentally tough, pacing yourself, eating, and recovering are crucial to completion. A few of the most well-known ultras include Western States 100, UTMB, and Badwater 135.
