A warm-up is a simple workout performed prior to a race or strenuous workout to prepare the body for hard work.
In endurance competitions, this might translate to 5 to 20 minutes of light swimming, cycling, or running. Warm-ups increase your heart rate, increase blood flow to your muscles, and reduce the risk of injury. Warm-ups also get you focused on the competition rather than drowsy. You may add dynamic stretching or fast running to a warm-up to condition your muscles and nerves.
