Washboard refers to a series of close-together bumps or ridges on dirt or gravel roads.
These coarse surfaces shake a bike, decrease grip, and reduce speed. Washboards are typical in mountain bike riding and on gravel roads. Washboards must be ridden cautiously and tire pressures adjusted to ride well. Riders may ride slightly higher in the saddle or move their weight to remain stable.
