Wave Start

A wave start is most common in larger Half Marathons and Marathons with thousands of participants. Runners are generally organized into waves or corrals based on their predicted race finish time or pace. Some races require certification of a prior race result in order to be admitted to a certain wave or corral, while in other races runners have the ability to self-seed themselves into a wave they deem most appropriate given their ability. Wave starts in cycling, especially in larger Grand Fondos, are not uncommon either.
