Hands down one of meanest and leanest black bean burger recipes you will ever find. This is one of Andy‘s – our Chief Ho’Omau – favorites. For a plant-based vegan burger, it really doesn’t get any better and on the healthy scale, it far outweighs the plant-based alternatives you can purchase in the store. Make sure to refrigerate the patties before forming the burgers and you’ll be all set.

1 can organic black beans
1⁄2 cup organic old fashioned oats (not steel cut)
1⁄4 cup bread crumbs
1⁄4 cup salsa (drain off liquid if it is runny)
1 tbs ground flaxseed
3 tbs cold water
2 ts ground cumin
2 ts chilli powder
2 ts garlic powder
1⁄2 ts smoked paprica
4 100% whole grain burger buns
1 large leaf lettuce (if substitution buns)
2 tbs Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- Optional Toppings
cashew sriracha sauce
caramelized balsamic onions
ketchup
BBQ sauce
mustard
onion slices
avocado or guacamole
pickles
lettuce
tomato slices
Directions
- Mix 1 Tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 Tablespoons of cold water and place in the fridge.
- Pulse beans with your food processor until mashed but not mushy!! Or you can mash them in a bowl with a fork or potato masher.
- Add the oats, bread crumbs, salsa, all the spices (Worcestershire sauce is optional), and the flaxseed that you chilled in the fridge to the food processor or bowl. Pulse or mix some more. Let it stay chunky.
- Divide mixture into 4 sections. Form each section into a patty and place them on a large plate.
- Refrigerate the plate of burger patties for about 20 minutes. This step is not optional as the burgers cook up so much better and keep their form.
- Spray oil in a pan on medium heat.
- Pan fry each burger patty for 3-4 minutes on each side until lightly browned and crispy on the outside.
- Assemble burger on a bun or lettuce wrap with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
