Plan Your Ride

Victory in the desert is won months before you clip into your pedals. Logistics, safety protocols, equipment, and variable analysis are the difference between a DNF and the Hall of Fame. Every Vegas In 24 attempt requires a meticulous operational plan. Whether you are mobilizing your own Independent Unit or utilizing Ho’Omau Pro Support, the 24-hour clock does not care about any excuses.

Riding self-supported is the rawest way to face Vegas In 24. It is a massive undertaking that demands hundreds of hours of logistical preparation.

The Reality of Self-Support Choosing to manage your own crew means you are the Director of Operations. In 2016, it took five months to map the original route, secure the safety vehicle, and train the crew. If you choose this path, you must be prepared for:

  • The Crew Mandate: You must maintain a minimum 2-person licensed crew to rotate driving. Fatigue is your crew’s biggest enemy; an exhausted driver is a liability to the mission.

  • Vehicle Readiness: Your follow car must be a mobile fortress. Mechanical failure of the vehicle results in a mission failure for the rider.

  • The Technical Burden: You are responsible for installing and maintaining front/rear dashboard cameras with 24-hour continuous recording. Without this footage, your ride cannot be verified for the Leaderboard.

  • Medical Contingency: We highly recommend a crew member with an MD or RN background. In the deep desert, you are hours from emergency services.

  • The Intelligence Gap: Entering the Mojave without professional intel is a high-stakes gamble. You will be responsible for your own deep-route scouting, analyzing unpredictable crosswind corridors, and mapping out the few existing life-lines (rest stops) hidden in the emptiness. Most “logical” stops on a map are ghost towns or closed shutters. Without our verified data, you are essentially flying blind through a furnace, relying on guesswork where there is zero margin for error.

If you don’t want to go through the logistics, planning, financial and time investment to put together your entire team and event, you can get our support crew to do some, most, or all of it for you. Choose from several options based on your specific needs and focus more time on your training instead. Ho’Omau Support services are optional. As long as you follow the rules, you can use your own crew and plan every bit on your own. All finishers will receive their awards trophy, certificate, t-shirt, etc and entry on the leaderboard regardless of whether Ho’Omau support services are utilized.

As the person who not just created Vegas In 24 but mapped it, planned it, rode it and first completed it, Andy has plenty of advice to anyone contemplating this challenge. The videos below offer general advice and a basic understanding of what will be required to successfully complete one of the four available routes – they are not detailed in nature and do not replace diligent planning and logistics. If you are serious about completing the challenge but have more questions than you can answer, we suggest using the Ho’Omau Support Crew Base Package. This will allow you to focus on your training and eliminate the somewhat overwhelming planning phase for the event.
