Elapsed time is not a fair calculation method for the overall leaderboard as each course has different distances, elevation profiles, and traffic interference. Therefore, the overall leaderboard is calculated by using the rider’s average speed over the entire elapsed time of the event, calculated with a preset number of miles for the total distance of each event. These distanced are:
- Phoenix: 345 miles
- Los Angeles: 365 miles
- San Diego: 400 miles
- Reno: 448 miles
These distances are used for all riders independent of how far they actually rode. If a rider takes a wrong turn and adds 3 extra miles to his route but ends up with a faster overall speed than another rider, the event would still be calculated based on the preset number of miles above. In this scenario, the rider would be equally fast as a person riding the exact course (3 miles less) at the same average speed. As a result, precise adherence to the course will work to every rider’s advantage. We are displaying moving speed in the leaderboard as an indicator as to how fast the rider was without including rest stops, traffic stops, rail stops, etc – however this is done purely as an illustration. The top placing riders in the overall leaderboard are those with the fastest average speed.
