Chain

A chain is a vital component joining the crankset (front ring) with the cassette (rear cogs). It transfers power from the pedals of the rider to the wheel in the rear. The chain is constructed of interlocked metal links and maintained taut with the rear derailleur.

Chains age over time and must be cleaned, lubricated, and occasionally replaced to prevent wear on the drivetrain components. In long-distance sports such as triathlon or distance cycling, the functionality of the drivetrain—the chain included—is highly significant for performance. Clean and well-maintained chains reduce friction and loss of power.
