Gravity Wave

Gravity waves in swimming are tiny waves on the surface of the water formed by a swimmer swimming through it. As the swimmer displaces water, waves propagate, reach the pool walls or floor, and return as turbulence. These waves disturb other lanes, altering stroke rhythm and efficiency. In pool design, deeper water and lane lines that minimize waves assist in reducing gravity wave reflections. Swimmers adjust body position and speed to cope with oncoming turbulence. An understanding of gravity waves assists coaches in planning swimmer order in lanes and in training athletes to remain steady and quick during water movement.
