The peloton refers to the large group of cyclists in a competition. The cyclists ride close to each other in the group.
Cyclists in the peloton ride in close formation to gain the advantage of drafting and conserve energy as wind resistance lessens. Teams ride in coordination and even engage in competition as they shield their leaders, mark breakaways, and prepare their sprinters. It requires extra effort and precise timing to leave the peloton and remaining within it involves being constantly attentive to the pace increase or slowing down of the group and to the road conditions as well as the actions of the competitors.
