Positioning is an athlete’s location relative to other competitors and course features, critical in swimming, cycling, and running. Positioning in open water swimming involves drafting behind other swimmers, not bunching at buoys, and taking the cleanest water line. In cycling, positioning is being near the front of the peloton to counter attacks, be safe from crashes, and be positioned for sprints. In running, positioning is drafting advantage (if windy), pacing with rivals, and timing breaks. Proper positioning is a trade-off between energy saving and tactical readiness, so that athletes are in good position when the race-deciding moments arrive.
