Reach and Roll is a method swimmers use to eat or drink in open water. A swimmer reaches up to receive food or drink from a coach on a feeding platform, then rolls over onto their back to utilize it. This method maintains the stability of the swim stroke and allows the swimmer to continue to move forward. By stretching out with their hand (“reach”) and rolling over onto their back (“roll”), athletes can eat or drink safely without stopping, then roll over onto their front to continue swimming. Mastering Reach and Roll simplifies eating and drinking during long races and makes pacing easier.
